MARCH 2001 YMF NEWS

What is the Younger Member Forum (YMF)

The Younger Member Forum was created in 1992 as an ASCE Hawaii Section committee to help young ASCE members transition from college to the working world.  The YMF sponsors activities that are geared towards the young engineer.

If you are an ASCE member who is 35 years old and younger, you are part of the YMF.  If you would like to participate in YMF activites such as social outings, community work and helping young engineers as they start their professional careers, please contact Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

April YMF meeting

The Next YMF meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at 5:30 pm at Sidestreet Inn.  It is a time to review past YMF events, plan new ones and just have some fun.  If you would like to attend, please call Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course

Thanks to all the instructors and attendees that made the 2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course a huge success.  We plan to start our next course in January 2002.  If you are interested or know of anyone interested, please contact Tony Lau at 522-7426 or tlau@hawaiipacificengineers.com.  Official notices for the course will be available in October 2001.

2001 Employer Recognition Award Winners

Congratulations to Hawaii Pacific Engineers, Inc. and M&E Pacific, Inc. for winning national awards for providing Encouraging and Exemplary Support of Younger Member Involvement in ASCE Activities.  They were among nine private firms and government agencies nationally recognized by ASCE in 2001.  They were presented their awards at the March Hawaii Section dinner meeting.

To qualify for this award, an employer should exhibit exemplary support evidenced by efforts such as:

  • Providing a model for involvement through company-wide participation in local, regional and national ASCE activities.
  • Allowing young engineers time off to attend ASCE meetings and seminars.
  • Supporting and encouraging technical and professional growth.
  • Assisting in the payment of local and national dues.

Please contact Jamie Hikiji at 521-3051 for a nomination form if you would like to nominate your employer for this award.  Nomination forms are due to the Hawaii YMF by July 15, 2001.

ASCE YMF Web Page

The ASCE YMF Web Page has been updated to provide the younger member with more information about the YMF activities.  We have also included links to other YMF sections in the Western Region.  Check out the updated ASCE YMF web page at: http://www.ascehawaii.org/ymf.html.

Support Requested for Student Chapter Activities

The University of Hawaii ASCE Student Chapter received the Outstanding Student Chapter Award at the 2001 Western Regional Younger Member Conference in Sacramento, California.  CONGRATULATIONS!

As we would expect, the Student Chapter is not resting on their laurels as they continue with preparations for their annual concrete canoe and steel bridge competition in April.  This year’s event will be held at Long Beach, California.  To compete in this event, they are humbly requesting any support that our engineering community can offer.  Material and freight costs for shipping the 22-foot long, 500-pound crate and canoe are just some of the major expenses that they will incur.  Any and every donation (money, materials, or other forms of assistance) would be greatly appreciated.

As part of their fundraising activities, the students are feverishly conducting car washes and selling Zippy’s chili tickets.  The chili tickets are being sold for $5 through March 16 and may be redeemed for a 24-ounce bucket of meat or vegetarian chili.  Please contact the Student Chapter at 956-5808 for more information, or mail donations payable to ASCE to the following address:

Let’s all help the Student Chapter continue with their winning ways.
