Association (HWEA) / American Society of Civil Engineers – Hawaii Section
(ASCE) Biennial Water Reuse Conference
The Joint AWWA / HWEA /
ASCE – Hawaii Section Biennial Water Reuse Conference will be held on November
16 & 17, 2006 at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on the Big Island.
The theme for this year’s conference is Ka Wai Ho’i Hou: Ho’ononiakahi
I Kakou Kumu Waiwai (Recycled Water: Integrating Our Resources).
The scheduled keynote speaker
will be Mr. Peter Young, Director of the Hawaii State Department of Land
and Natural Resources. Conference attendees can learn about water reuse
happenings Down Under in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in Monterey,
California. Attendees will also get an update on the latest in the Hawaii
State Department of Health Reuse Guidelines.

Brief biographical sketches for Jeffrey Kalani, Roger Babcock and Lori
Nishida are provided below.
After
earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Civil Engineering in 1996
and 1997 from the University of Hawaii, Jeff Kalani, P.E.,
joined the Honolulu office of Woodward Clyde. In 2005, he joined Yogi Kwong
Engineers as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Construction Manager. Jeff
has been a registered professional engineer licensed in the state of Hawaii
since 2001 and has gained a wide variety of design experience on challenging
civil, geotechnical, and trenchless engineering projects throughout the
Pacific. Currently, Jeff specializes in the design and construction management
of some the largest and most challenging jet grouting, microtunneling and
horizontal directional drilling operations in the state of Hawaii, and
has co-authored numerous technical publications on these topics. In 2005,
Jeff received the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional
Achievement, and 2006, he received the Young Engineer of the Year award
presented by the Hawaii Society of Profession Engineers. Since 1996, Jeff
has been an active ASCE member who has served in numerous positions within
ASCE including: chairperson for the University of Hawaii Student Chapter
Concrete Canoe Team, Practitioner Advisor for the ASCE Hawaii Section,
and the ASCE YMF’s Director, President, Job Shadow, and Community Service
and Golf Committees Chairperson.
Dr.
Roger Babcock, P.E., is an Associate Professor of Civil &
Environmental Engineering at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu Hawaii.
He is also affiliated with the Water Resources Research Center. He obtained
a B.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Davis, a M.S. in Civil Engineering
from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from UCLA.
Dr. Babcock worked for Carollo Engineers in the early 1990s and has been
at the University of Hawaii since 1995. Dr. Babcock conducts research on
biological wastewater treatment, water recycling, membrane bioreactors,
membrane fouling mechanisms, fate and transport of wastewater residuals
in soils, and adsorption and regeneration of pesticides on activated carbon.
Dr. Babcock also does consulting work for several Hawaii and mainland firms
and is a member of ASCE, WEF, IWA and AEESP. He is the Faculty Advisor
for the UH Student Chapter and is also currently President of the College
of Engineering Faculty Senate, Chair of the UH Ethics Focus General Education
Committee, Committee Chair of Cub Scout Pack 864, and a member of the Mililani
Town Association Board of Directors.
Lori
Nishida, P.E., has accepted the nomination to the office of President
of the Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum (YMF). She is a University of
Hawaii graduate and has been actively involved with ASCE having served
as the Student Chapter President, YMF Wiliki Chair, YMF Secretary and currently
serves as the YMF Vice President, YMF PE Refresher Course Chair, and Hawaii
Section Membership Chair.
The election
of the FY 2007 ASCE Hawaii Section Officers will take place at the September
Luncheon Meeting.

move on to the field next to the administration office to park for the
duration of the career fair. Someone will be there to direct you when you
arrive.

be speaking to about 40-50 students in the cafeteria from 10:10-11:00 am

Candidates
for ASCE Region 8 Director - F. Lawrence Bennett and Westley K.C. Chun
F. Lawrence Bennett, P.E., Ph.D., F.ASCE
Larry
Bennett retired from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1997 after 29
years on its Engineering Management faculty. After two years each as a
visiting professor at Cornell and at the University of Canterbury, New
Zealand, he now maintains an active consulting practice and teaches part
time. His bachelor's in civil engineering is from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, and his master's and doctoral degrees were awarded by Cornell.
The author of four books and over 50 professional papers and articles,
a registered civil engineer and land surveyor, and an ASCE Life Member
and Fellow, he served as branch and section president and chair of national
committees in engineering management, cold regions engineering and natural
disaster reduction. He served on the Region 8 formation team and was recently
selected to its first Board of Governors. He has also held leadership positions
in NSPE, American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Boy Scouts,
Rotary and the United Methodist Church.
Westley K.C. Chun, Ph.D., P.E., DEE,
F.ASCE
Westley
Chun received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and doctorate
degrees in civil engineering; is a Diplomate of American Academy of Environmental
Engineers (AAEE); and is a licensed professional engineer in Hawaii, Guam
and California. Â Westley is a senior project manager in CH2M HILL’s
Honolulu Office. He has planned and designed water and wastewater systems
throughout the West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii, Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia
and Eastern Europe. His projects received awards from the ACEC, American
Institute of Architects (AIA) and National Water Resources Institute (NWRI).
Westley is a Fellow, Region
8 governor, past president of the Hawaii Section, and chair of the Hawaii
Council of Engineering Societies. While serving on its executive committee,
the Hawaii Section received the Outstanding Zone IV Large Section Award
four consecutive years, including the year that Westley served as its president.
Westley is also active in the local chapters of American Public Works Association,
ACEC and Water Environment Federation (WEF); and initiated several task
forces and associations to protect public health and safety.
