Senior Geotechnical/Geological Engineer

Hart Crowser, Inc. is a multi-disciplinary earth and environmental consulting firm.  We provide innovative and creative solutions to clients in private industry and the public sector.  We are pleased to have an immediate and unique opportunity for an Associate to Principal level Geotechnical/Geological Engineer to join our Honolulu area office to assume a critical role in developing and managing geologic hazard and geotechnical engineering projects.

This multidiscipline position requires:

  1. An MS in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering with significant experience or coursework in engineering geology. 
  2. The candidate should be a P.E., have 10+ years of experience in geologic and geotechnical disciplines.
  3. A proven track record of business development.


This role will focus on business development and project management related to geologic hazards, with emphasis on rockfall hazard evaluations and design. This individual will develop business, scope, estimate and manage such projects.  The candidate may also need to complete limited field reconnaissance and mapping, landslide investigations, stability analyses and rockfall assessments to supplement available staff.  Leadership skills in other geotechnical practice areas such as commercial or waterfront development is highly desirable. Responsibilities will include geotechnical design and construction recommendations for a variety of commercial and industrial development, transportation, and port/harbor projects.

The successful candidate will have experience and be capable of managing staff in the following areas: field reconnaissance at watershed to site-specific scales; aerial photographic and remote sensing data interpretation; geomorphology characterization, mapping and interpretation; construction monitoring; field exploration and sample collection; research, evaluation and interpretation of subsurface data; engineering calculations and analyses; landslide, rockfall, seismic and other geologic hazards evaluations.  A proven track record of increasing responsibility in business development, geotechnical design, project management, and quality assurance oversight  responsibilities will be critical.   

As a consultant, this individual must possess strong communications skills, including negotiating scopes and fees with clients, preparing technical documents, and mentoring and directing staff.    Working as an Associate to Principal level requires increasing ability to be responsible for technical review of the work of others, managing budgets and assuring project profitability.  This position includes ownership opportunity in a dynamic 40-year old employee-owned company. 

The responsibilities of this position will involve travel as well as limited fieldwork.  While work will primarily be within the Hawaiian Islands, the ability to travel and work throughout the U.S. and the Pacific Islands region is important.  A current driver’s license and the ability to lift 40~50 lbs. are required.  As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must be able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the U.S. 

Project Geotechnical/Geological Engineer

This multidiscipline position requires:

  1. MS in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering with significant experience or coursework in engineering geology. 
  2. The candidate should be a P.E., or be P.E. eligible, with 6+ years of experience in geologic and geotechnical disciplines. 
  3. Climbing experience and certification, such as SPRAT level I or higher or the equivalent


This role will focus on geologic hazards, with emphasis on rockfall hazard evaluations and design. This individual will scope, estimate and manage such projects as well as possess the ability to complete field reconnaissance and mapping, landslide investigations, stability analyses and rockfall assessments.  Other geotechnical responsibilities will include geotechnical design and construction recommendations for a variety of commercial and industrial development, transportation, and port/harbor projects.

The successful candidate will have experience in the following tasks: field reconnaissance at watershed to site-specific scales; aerial photographic and remote sensing data interpretation; geomorphology characterization, mapping and interpretation; construction monitoring; field exploration and sample collection; research, evaluation and interpretation of subsurface data; engineering calculations and analyses; landslide, rockfall, seismic and other geologic hazards evaluations.  A proven track record of increasing responsibility in geotechnical design and project management will be critical.   Business development interests and capabilities will also be valuable. 

The ability to conduct field work and self-navigate in rugged terrain with GPS and/or map and compass is a necessary skill for this position.  Working knowledge of subsurface explorations (e.g., test pits, borings, etc.), characterizing soil and rock materials, and conducting standard geotechnical soils tests (e.g., Atterberg Limits, sieve analyses, Proctors, etc.) is also critical.

As a consultant, this individual must possess strong communications skills, including technical report writing.  Responsibilities require one to be equally comfortable working with contractors at construction sites and participating in client presentations.  Working knowledge of geotechnical, and particularly rockfall and stability, software programs including Slope W and Rocfall as well as proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite will be necessary.
