JOINT ASCE & SEAOH MARCH DINNER MEETING NOTICE
Program: "Hybrid Masonry Seismic Structural Systems"
by David T. Biggs, PE, Distinguished Member ASCE,
Principal, Biggs Consulting Engineering, Troy, New York.
Mr. Biggs is the originator of a lateral-load resisting system called hybrid
masonry. Conceived for low seismic applications,
hybrid masonry utilizes reinforced concrete masonry infill panels to brace a
conventional steel frame. In 2009, an NSFNetwork
for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) sponsored research project was
initiated to study the system
performance in high seismic applications. The system development has received
industry support from both AISC and
the masonry industry. The research is being led by Prof. Dan Abrams of the
University of Illinois. Prof. Ian Robertson is
leading a significant research effort at the University of Hawaii, and
analytical work is being performed at Rice University.
Mr. Biggs will provide an introduction to the system as both a designer of
existing systems and as a leading member of
the research team.
