Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest
The Hawaii Section of ASCE
is looking for volunteers to help out with the Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest.
This event will be held at the University of Hawaii, Holmes Hall on November
17, 2006 from approximately 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The contestants are 24
middle school teams comprised of up to 3 students each. Using popsicle
sticks, Elmer's glue, and their imaginations, they are trying to support
as much weight as they can suspended over a 2-foot wide gap. Volunteers
are needed for the following activities:

8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Registration (2 people) - Check
in teams and collect bridges.

8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Photographer/Reporter (1 person)
- Takes photos, writes Wiliki article.

Master of Ceremonies (1 person)
- Directs the stages of the contest and announces the winners.

Testing of Bridges (4 people)
- Weigh each bridge, check that the bridge meets all contest rules and
requirements, and load buckets with sand until bridge fails. Bridges
that do not meet contest rules and requirements may be tested for point
of failure but will no longer be eligible to win.

9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Judges (4 people) - Judges bridge
presentation. Each team is required to do a presentation to two judges.
A score sheet with predetermined criteria will be provided for this purpose.
***Most importantly: The
volunteers will be provided a t-shirt, parking pass & lunch.
