City
and County of Honolulu Storm Drain Stenciling
By
Jennifer Chang/Emi Kiyoi, Community Service Chairs
On
Saturday January 20, 2007 approximately twenty Civil Engineering students
from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and ten Younger Forum Members assisted
the City and County of Honolulu with a storm drain stenciling event called
"E Malama I Ka Wai Ola, Help Protect Our Waters....For Life."
Although
the event got rained out in the Manoa neighborhood, everyone was eager
to relocate to the Salt Lake neighborhood. Over 100 storm drains
were stenciled on the storm drains to educate residents not to dump waste
into the storm drains. Handout bags with pollution tips were handed
out to interested residents. Members also assisted with a curbside
cleanup and were educated about illegal dumping. The event was highly
successful and ended with a bento lunch from Sugois. |
