Ameron
Hawaii's Kapaa Quarry Field Trip
A technical field trip to Ameron Hawaii’s Kapaa Quarry was organized by
the Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum (YMF) on September 13, 2003. Ken
Kumura, Dave Moore, and Mitchell Kido of Ameron Hawaii sacrificed their
busy Saturday morning to lead the group of five (5) on a two-hour tour
of the facility. As operations continued at the facility, the group was
treated to a behind the scenes look at Ameron Hawaii’s Kapaa Quarry, which
is situated on 416 acres separated into two phases with
reserves totaling approximately
80 million tons for the next 40-50 years. Ken, Dave, and Mitchell provided
narration throughout the field trip and described the processes involved
at the quarry pit and the primary, tertiary, mansand, and sized rock plants
as well as environmental concerns such as air and water quality, blast
vibration and noise control, and reforestation/beautification.
The YMF would like to thank
Ken Kumura, Dave Moore, Mitchell Kido, and Ameron Hawaii for the great
opportunity to tour the facility. The attendees were impressed with the
field trip and the hospitality shown by Ameron Hawaii. |
