SEPTEMBER 2001 YMF NEWS

2002 Civil Professional Engineering Exam Refresher Course

The YMF will coordinate a Refresher Course for the Civil Professional Engineering Examination that will start in early January 2002. This course is provided annually and has been very successful in helping young engineers to pass the PE Exam. The class size is limited to provide a more intimate classroom setting with the instructor. You do not need to be an ASCE member to sign up for the course. Detailed information will be provided in the November Wiliki and on the ASCE YMF website at www.ascehawaii.org/ymf/PErefresher.html at the end of October. For further questions, please contact Tony Lau at 522-7426 or at tlau@hawaiipacificengineers.com.

2002 Hawaii Young Engineer of the Year Award

The ASCE YMF is requesting nominees for the 2002 Hawaii Young Engineer of the Year Award. This award is presented annually at the Hawaii Engineer's Week Banquet in February. The award is presented to a young engineer who has shown achievement both professionally and within the community. The young engineer must be 35 years or age or less on January 1, 2002 and must be a member of an engineering organization of the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies (HCES). The ASCE YMF nominee must be a member of ASCE. For nomination forms, please contact Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

2002 Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award

This award was established by Edmund Friedman, Past President of ASCE, to recognize the significant professional contributions of younger members of ASCE in the following areas: 1) service to the advancement of the profession; 2) evidence of technical competence, high character and integrity; 3) leadership in the development of younger member attitudes towards the profession; 4) contributions to public service outside of their professional career; and 5) other evidence of merit which, in the judgment of the award committee, has advanced the Society's objectives. No more than five (5) recipients nationally will be named in any one year. The deadline for nominations to ASCE National is February 1, 2001. For more information, contact Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

2002 Daniel W. Mead Contest for Younger Members

The Daniel W. Mead Prize for Younger Members was established in 1939 to honor the memory and accomplishments of the 67th President of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The talents of many of the leaders of the profession were first recognized in previous contests for this significant professional honor. The current contest provides another opportunity for alert young civil engineers to further their professional development and gain national attention. In recognition of the 150th Anniversary of ASCE (1852-2002), the Society is both celebrating its history and looking forward to its future. This year's Mead topic invites you to discuss the impact of ethics on the civil engineering profession in this context. The paper must be written on: "Ethics and Civil Engineering: Past, Present and Future". Points to ponder include 1) What ethical challenges will face Civil Engineers 50 years from now? and 2) Given the technological advances of the last 150 years, how will technology influence civil engineering ethics in the future? The deadline for papers to ASCE National is February 1, 2001. For more information, contact Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

2002 Collingwood Prize for Younger Members

This prize was instituted and endowed in 1894 by Francis Collingwood, past secretary of ASCE. The prize is awarded to the author or authors of a paper describing an engineering work with which the author(s) have been directly connected; or recording investigations contributing to engineering knowledge to which the author(s) have contributed some essential part; and containing a rational digest of results. Any mathematical treatment must show immediate adaptability to professional practice. The deadline for papers to ASCE National is February 1, 2001. For more information, contact Willie Gacutan at 847-3763, x212.

2002 Young Government Civil Engineer of the Year

Qualifications of the award nominees are judged on the following: 1) Excellent performance that has demonstrated leadership potential in public service engineering; 2) Evidence of high character and professional integrity; 3) Civic and humanitarian activities (community service); 4) Thirty-five years of age or less on December 31, 2001; and 5) Between 5 and 10 years of public service. Up to four (4) recipients may be designated in any year, no more than one from each zone. A national winner may be selected from the zonal winners.
