Thursday, May 3, 2007 ASCE Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum Recognized as an Environmental Hero by the City & County of Honolulu By Lori Nishida, YMF President The City and County of Honolulu (CCH) has for many years been emphasizing public awareness of being kind to our environment. In an effort to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly habits, the CCH, Department of Environmental Services, Division of Environmental Quality, Storm Water Quality Branch has organized “Adopt-A-Block” and “Adopt-A-Stream” programs in which teams from various schools, businesses, organizations and governmental agencies provide on-going voluntary assistance in clean-up and pollution prevention actions. This year, the CCH has marked April as “Earth Month” and launched their “Be An Everyday Environmental Hero/Good Neighborhood and Good Business Program,” in an effort to encourage long-term stewardship of our community’s precious resources as an “everyday environmental hero”. On March 19, 2007 the American Society of Civil Engineers, Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum (ASCE Hawaii Section YMF) was invited to attend the Mayor’s Earth Month Proclamation and Kick-Off Ceremony at Kapolei Hale to be recognized as one of the recipients of the 2007 Everyday Environmental Hero Team Leadership Award. Candidate groups for the award have been participating in the CCH Storm Drain Stenciling, Adopt-A-Block, or Adopt-A-Stream programs for a minimum of two years and have shown consistent and continual activity throughout the duration. There are currently over 130 schools, businesses, organizations and governmental agencies recognized as everyday environmental heroes by the CCH. Of these groups, the ASCE Hawaii Section YMF was one of 34 awards recipients. We would like to recognize our Hawaii Section YMF Community Service Chairs that organize this event every year as well as our members who have always participated with a great deal of enthusiasm. After the tour, there will be a pau-hana party at Cafe Bronco. Cost for the field trip package which includes the tour and dinner is $17. However, if you just want to attend the fuel facility tour, there is no charge. Please call Carrie Matsuzaki at 956-2286 to make your reservations by this Friday, September 14. The fuel facility tour is limited to 20 people so call early. Please see flyer for detailed information. Tue Aug 28 22:55:46 2001 August 2001 YMF News 2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course The 2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course was a success! The 2001 class passing rate was 12-percent higher than the National passing rate. The YMF will once again be organizing a PE Refresher Course for 2002. The class will start in January and will end in March. Flyers for the class will be available in late-October 2001. Flyer will be available on the YMF website at www.ascehawaii.org/ymf.html. Storm Drain Stenciling
The YMF is seeking volunteers to perform storm drain stenciling from 9:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 31, 2001. Lunch and the satisfaction
of participating in this worthy community project will be provided.

As we would expect, the Student Chapter is not resting on their laurels as they continue with preparations for their annual concrete canoe and steel bridge competition in April. This year’s event will be held at Long Beach, California. To compete in this event, they are humbly requesting any support that our engineering community can offer. Material and freight costs for shipping the 22-foot long, 500-pound crate and canoe are just some of the major expenses that they will incur. Any and every donation (money, materials, or other forms of assistance) would be greatly appreciated. As part of their fundraising activities, the students are feverishly conducting car washes and selling Zippy’s chili tickets. The chili tickets are being sold for $5 through March 16 and may be redeemed for a 24-ounce bucket of meat or vegetarian chili.
