April ASCE YMF Meeting
The ASCE YMF April 4th, meeting has changed locations. The new venue will be Sam Choy's Breakfast Lunch and Crab along Nimitz Hwy at 6:00 PM.

Congratulations to Lorna Heller, P.E., on her selection as a recipient of the 2004 Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement and the Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum as the 2004 recipient of the Younger Member Group Award for Large Groups.  See pages 6-7 of the Fall '04 Younger Member Newsletter at http://www.asce.org/pdf/Issue52.pdf.  The Hawaii Section YMF Stencils Storm Drains article and photographs of YMF members including new YMF President Paulette Chang are also featured on page 14.

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) publishes our newsletter three times per year, in an effort to keep Younger Members apprised of successful events, upcoming activities, award deadlines and contact information. We have added Student Members to our distribution list as our way of inviting you to become involved in Younger Member activities, both now and after graduation. One of the primary functions of CYM is to ease the transition of student members into the mainstream of ASCE - we hope that you will contact us if you have any questions about becoming involved with a Younger Member Group in your area (contact information is on the last page of the newsletter).

2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course The 2001 ASCE YMF PE Refresher Course was a success! The 2001 class passing rate was 12-percent higher than the National passing rate. The YMF will once again be organizing a PE Refresher Course for 2002. The class will start in January and will end in March. Flyers for the class will be available in late-October 2001. Flyer will be available on the YMF website at www.ascehawaii.org/ymf.html. Seeking Nominees for Awards Chairperson for YMF 2001 - 2002.

Storm Drain Stenciling The YMF is seeking volunteers to perform storm drain stenciling from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 31, 2001.  Lunch and the satisfaction of participating in this worthy community project will be provided.  Please contact Tony Lau (524-3771 or tony@hawaiipacificengineers.com) for more information including the location.
Support Requested for Student Chapter Activities The University of Hawaii ASCE Student Chapter received the Outstanding Student Chapter Award at the 2001 Western Regional Younger Member Conference in Sacramento, California.  CONGRATULATIONS!

As we would expect, the Student Chapter is not resting on their laurels as they continue with preparations for their annual concrete canoe and steel bridge competition in April.  This year’s event will be held at Long Beach, California.  To compete in this event, they are humbly requesting any support that our engineering community can offer.  Material and freight costs for shipping the 22-foot long, 500-pound crate and canoe are just some of the major expenses that they will incur.  Any and every donation (money, materials, or other forms of assistance) would be greatly appreciated. 

As part of their fundraising activities, the students are feverishly conducting car washes and selling Zippy’s chili tickets.  The chili tickets are being sold for $5 through March 16 and may be redeemed for a 24-ounce bucket of meat or vegetarian chili.  Please contact the Student Chapter at 956-5808 for more information, or mail donations payable to ASCE to the following address:
